Glass cleaner

The film on the inside of a windshield comes from interior plastics off-gassing, fingerprints, smoking, and dust blown up by the HVAC system. Spray an ammonia-free, low-residue glass cleaner onto a cloth, wipe once side to side and once top to bottom, then buff dry. Don't spray liquid onto the dashboard, and air the car out afterward.

Rinse off dust and mud first. Gray rain streaks are mostly dust and grime, and glass cleaner handles them. White, spotty water marks are mineral deposits and need a descaler compress to soften them. Finish by squeegeeing top to bottom and drying the edges. Never lean out of a high window to reach the outside.

Wipe off food bits and sticky spots with a damp cloth first, then spray glass cleaner onto a microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and grease, and buff dry in one direction. Clean both the top and underside, and wipe away cup rings and drink spills as soon as they happen.

We don't recommend it. Many glass cleaners contain ammonia or a lot of alcohol, which can damage a screen's anti-glare or oleophobic coating and leave haze or spots you can't wipe away. For TVs, monitors, and laptops, use a neutral, ammonia- and alcohol-free screen cleaner sprayed onto a cloth.

Homemade vinegar and water handles light water spots but is weak on grease and fingerprints and smells like vinegar. Rubbing alcohol and water cuts grease fast but evaporates so quickly that it streaks. A well-made glass cleaner balances grease removal, evaporation speed, and low residue, so it's easier to get streak-free glass in one pass.

Once the stove and glass are completely cool, spray fireplace glass cleaner, wait 1 to 2 minutes, and wipe away the soot and creosote film with a damp cloth or soft scraper, then wipe with clean water and dry. White haze on gas fireplace glass may be mineral deposits, or it may be etching in the glass itself; check which.

Mirror fog is warm steam condensing into tiny droplets on cooler glass. The most effective step is running the exhaust fan and cracking the door during your shower to cut the steam. Anti-fog sprays and coatings reduce fogging for a while and need reapplying; a heated defogging mirror is the long-term fix.

Black edges on a mirror are usually desilvering: moisture has corroded the silver coating on the back. It's damage to the mirror itself, and no cleaner can remove or repair it. Confirm it isn't surface grime, then keep it from spreading by spraying cleaner on a cloth and keeping liquid away from the edges and back.

Let the glass cool completely, spray oven glass cleaner and wait 5 to 10 minutes, scrape off the baked-on film with a plastic scraper, then wipe several times with a damp cloth. Grease between the panes only comes out if your manual says the door or glass can be removed. If it doesn't, don't force it.

To clean a bathroom mirror without streaks, soften toothpaste and hairspray spots with a damp cloth first. Then spray glass cleaner onto a cloth, not the mirror, wipe from top to bottom, and buff dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Keep cleaner away from the edges so it can't seep behind the glass.

To clean windows with a squeegee, dust the frame and glass first, wet the glass with a light mist of cleaner or a scrubber, then pull the squeegee from top to bottom in an S pattern, wiping the blade after every stroke. Dry the edges with microfiber, and work in shade for the fewest streaks.

Glass usually streaks because there is too much cleaner on it, the cloth carries oil or fabric softener, or you cleaned in direct sun and the spray dried before you wiped it off. Switch to a clean microfiber cloth, spray less, wipe in one direction, and buff with a dry cloth.

Match the cleaner to the grime. Use a fast-drying, low-residue glass cleaner for dust and fingerprints on windows, mirrors and tables. Use a mildly acidic bathroom cleaner for hard water and soap scum on shower glass. Oven and fireplace glass need alkaline cleaners made for them. Use less product, wipe in one direction and dry the glass.
