Screen cleaner

Most neutral screen cleaners with no ammonia or alcohol are fine on standard lenses. For lenses with specialty coatings like blue-light, anti-fog, or photochromic, follow your optician's advice. Rinse dust off first, then wipe gently with a clean microfiber cloth, never a tissue or your shirt.

Turn the monitor off and look at it in side light. If you can see the spot and it fades or changes when wiped, it's surface dirt; mist screen cleaner on a cloth and wipe gently. If it only appears with the screen on, or never changes, it's inside the screen and cleaning won't fix it.

Microfiber works best: its ultrafine fibers trap skin oil and dust and carry them away without shedding lint. Most eyeglass cloths are microfiber too, just smaller. Paper towels and tissues are coarse, shed lint, and can leave fine marks. Wash your cloth regularly and never use fabric softener.

Power the phone off, mist screen cleaner onto a microfiber cloth, wipe the screen and body gently, and buff dry. Wash the case separately and let it dry completely before putting it back. Never spray the phone directly, and keep liquid out of the earpiece, speakers, mic holes, and charging port.

Foam stays put and is less likely to seep into gaps, which suits phones, tablets, and upright devices. Spray spreads easily and dries fast, which suits TVs and monitors. Apply either to a cloth first. Whether you get streaks depends on the amount, the formula's residue, and the cloth, not on spray versus foam.

Yes, but follow your TV's manual. Most makers recommend turning it off and wiping gently with a dry microfiber cloth. For fingerprints and smudges that won't come off, mist an alcohol- and ammonia-free screen cleaner onto the cloth and wipe lightly. Never spray the screen and never press hard.

Spray the microfiber cloth, not the screen. Spraying the screen makes it easy to use too much, and the liquid runs down into the bezel, buttons, and ports. Only spray directly, and sparingly, if both the cleaner's label and your device's manual allow it, and wipe it dry right away.

Disconnect or power off first, tip the keyboard upside down to shake out crumbs, and clear the gaps with a soft brush and air. Then spray electronics cleaner onto a cloth and wipe the keycaps, mouse, and controller. Never spray liquid directly on the device, and let everything dry before reconnecting.

Streaks after cleaning usually mean too much liquid, a dirty cloth, or cleaner residue. Turn the screen off and let it cool, switch to a clean microfiber cloth, mist a little screen cleaner onto the cloth, wipe in one direction, and finish with a dry cloth.

Not for routine cleaning. Some device makers allow an occasional 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe to disinfect the outside of a phone, but frequent use wears down the anti-fingerprint coating, and anti-glare coatings on TVs and monitors are even more sensitive. Check your device's guidance first.

To clean a laptop screen, shut it down and unplug it, then dust it with a dry microfiber cloth. For keyboard marks and fingerprints, spray screen cleaner onto a second cloth until it is barely damp, wipe gently once or twice, and finish with a dry side. Never press hard or spray the screen directly.

Turn the TV off and let the screen cool, then dust it gently with a dry microfiber cloth. For fingerprints and smudges, spray screen cleaner onto the cloth until it is barely damp, wipe in one direction with light pressure, and finish with a dry side of the cloth. Never spray the screen and never press.

Power off, then lift the dust with a clean microfiber cloth. If you need a cleaner, choose a neutral one without ammonia or alcohol, spray it on the cloth rather than the screen, wipe gently in one direction and finish with a dry side of the cloth. Skip paper towels, glass cleaner and pressing hard.
